Information We Collect

PhotoPrep is designed with a minimal data footprint. Here is exactly what we collect and why:

Information you provide directly:

• None — we do not require account creation, login, email address, or any personal registration to use PhotoPrep.
• If you choose Send feedback in the Menu, your email app may send a message to our support address. That message is handled by your email provider, not stored by PhotoPrep inside the app.

Information collected automatically (stored locally on your device):

• Edit history (local only): A Room database stores metadata about processed images — source URI, output URI/path, original and output file sizes, dimensions, output format, display name, editor mode, and timestamp. This data never leaves your device unless you share it yourself.
• App preferences: Settings such as language, theme (light/dark/system), default compression quality, default save format, save-to-gallery preference, compare-screen preference, default EXIF stripping, history auto-delete period, haptic feedback, and text size are stored locally using Android DataStore.
• Onboarding status: A local flag indicating whether you have completed the onboarding flow.
• Rating prompt state: Local counters and flags for successful process count and whether the in-app rating prompt was shown, accepted, or declined (including a 30-day cooldown after decline).

Information that may be sent to third parties (release builds with Firebase only):

• When the release build includes Firebase (google-services.json present at build time), anonymised analytics and crash data may be sent to Google Firebase. See Section 05. Debug builds or builds without Firebase configuration do not send this data.

How We Use Information

We use the information described above solely to provide and improve the PhotoPrep experience:

• To display your edit history in the History tab and related settings summaries.
• To remember your preferred settings so the app works as you left it.
• To optionally show a before/after compare screen after processing (can be disabled in Settings).
• To optionally prompt you to rate the app on Google Play after successful processing milestones (3, 8, or 15 successful operations).
• To auto-delete old history entries when you choose a retention period (30 or 90 days).
• To measure app stability and usage patterns through Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics in Firebase-enabled release builds only.

We do not sell, rent, or trade any data to third parties. We do not build advertising profiles. PhotoPrep does not display ads.

Photo Access & Processing

PhotoPrep compresses, resizes, crops, converts, watermarks, blurs backgrounds, renames, strips metadata from, and converts photos to PDF — all on your device. Here is precisely how photo access works:

Permissions declared in the app manifest:

• READ_MEDIA_IMAGES (Android 13+): Required to let you select photos using the system photo picker. We read photo data only when you actively select files. We do not background-scan or monitor your gallery.
• READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (maxSdkVersion 32): Legacy read access for photo selection on older Android versions.
• WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (maxSdkVersion 28): Legacy write access for saving outputs on very old Android versions.

PhotoPrep’s own manifest does not declare INTERNET. Release builds that include Firebase may merge additional permissions from the Firebase SDK for analytics and crash reporting only — not for uploading your photos.

What happens to your photos:

• You select up to 100 photos per batch using Android’s system photo picker.
• Photos are read into device memory, processed according to the tool you chose (Compress, Resize, Crop, Convert, Remove metadata, Image to PDF, Watermark, Background blur, Batch rename, or HEIC to JPG), and outputs are saved based on your settings.
• When Save results to gallery is enabled, outputs are saved to your device’s Pictures/PhotoPrep folder via the Android MediaStore API (or equivalent legacy storage path on older devices).
• A metadata record is saved to the local Room history database on your device.
• Your original photos are not modified or deleted by PhotoPrep automatically.
• Processed files can be shared to other apps using Android’s standard share sheet. PhotoPrep uses a FileProvider to grant temporary read access for sharing — files are not uploaded by PhotoPrep during sharing.

Third-Party Services

PhotoPrep integrates the following third-party components and services:

Google Firebase (Analytics & Crashlytics) — conditional: Included only in release builds where app/google-services.json is present at compile time. Firebase may collect anonymised usage and crash diagnostics. See Section 05. Google’s Privacy Policy: policies.google.com/privacy

Coil (image loading library): An open-source Android library used to display image thumbnails in the editor and history screens. Operates entirely on-device.

Google Play: PhotoPrep is distributed through Google Play. Google’s policies and privacy practices apply to app download, updates, and store interactions — not to your photo processing, which remains on-device.

PhotoPrep does not integrate advertising SDKs (such as Google AdMob) or in-app billing libraries.

Analytics & Crash Reporting

Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics are enabled only when the app is built with a valid google-services.json configuration file. When disabled (no config file), no-op implementations are used and no analytics data is transmitted.

What Firebase Analytics may collect in enabled builds:

• Screen views (Home, History, Menu, and editor screens).
• Processing events: success or failure, editor mode name, photo count, and bytes saved (on success).
• Standard Firebase device and app instance identifiers and diagnostic metadata as described in Google’s documentation.

What Firebase Crashlytics may collect in enabled builds:

• Crash stack traces and non-fatal error reports to help fix stability issues.
• Processing failure reasons (truncated to 100 characters, no photo content).

You can limit analytics collection using your device and Google account privacy settings. Uninstalling the app stops further data collection from that installation.

Advertising & In-App Purchases

PhotoPrep does not display advertisements.

PhotoPrep does not offer in-app purchases, subscriptions, or paid tiers. All editor tools are available without payment. Batch processing supports up to 100 photos per operation for all users.

There is nothing to buy inside the app and no ad personalisation to opt out of.

Data Storage & Security

Where data is stored: Edit history, preferences, and rating-prompt state are stored locally on your Android device. PhotoPrep does not operate servers that store your photos or personal profile data.

How long data is retained:

• History entries remain until you delete them individually, bulk-delete them, use Menu → Settings → Storage & history → Clear history, or uninstall the app.
• If you enable auto-delete history (30 or 90 days), expired entries are removed on app startup and when you change the retention setting.
• App preferences are removed when you uninstall the app (subject to Android backup behaviour below).
• Output photo files in Pictures/PhotoPrep persist until you delete them manually or through your gallery app.

Security measures: Data stored in PhotoPrep’s private app storage is protected by Android’s application sandbox. Your photos are not transmitted over the network by PhotoPrep’s core processing engine.

Backup: The app manifest sets android:allowBackup="true". Android may back up app preferences (not your photo files) when device backup is enabled. Files saved to Pictures/PhotoPrep may be included in your device or cloud gallery backups depending on your device settings (e.g. Google Photos backup).

Children's Privacy

PhotoPrep is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has used PhotoPrep in a way that raises privacy concerns, please contact us at the address below and we will take appropriate steps.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your data:

• Access: Because PhotoPrep stores data locally on your device, you already have direct access to your history and settings inside the app.
• Deletion: You may delete history entries in the History tab, clear all history in Settings, or uninstall the app to remove locally stored PhotoPrep data.
• Control processing defaults: You may enable default EXIF stripping and metadata removal tools before sharing photos.
• GDPR (EU/EEA users): If you are in the European Union or EEA, you may have additional rights under the GDPR, including data portability and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. For Firebase-related data processed by Google, refer to Google’s GDPR resources and your Google account controls.
• CCPA (California users): PhotoPrep does not sell your personal information.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the app’s features, applicable law, or our practices. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this document.

Continued use of PhotoPrep after an updated policy is posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.

The current version is accessible via Menu → Privacy → Privacy policy inside the app, and at the URL where this document is hosted.
